Amidst the whirlwind of a fast-paced mum life, balancing children’s activities, managing household chores, maintaining work commitments and staying connected with families and friends. Incorporating some mum hacks into your daily routine can be a game changer. These hacks not only will it help you with your schedule but also contribute to preserve your sanity and prioritise your well-being in the midst of life demands.

Whether you are a first time mum, experienced parent, a stay at home mum or just looking for easier way, here is the list of the most practical mum hacks that will change your life and save you time.

1. Prepare the Night Before

If you want to have a smooth morning it is always best to be organised the night before. As parents, crafting a well thought-out evening routine not only reduces stress but sets the stage for organised and successful mornings. To avoid morning wardrobe battles, select and lay out the next day clothes in the evening. Ensure that uniforms, bags, shoes, are all nearly arranged.

2. Batch Cooking / Meal prep

If you want to save time then embrace the power of meal prepping/batch cooking to make hectic weeknights more manageable. Dedicate a specific day to plan and prepare meals in advance, ensuring delicious and nutritious options are readily available when time is of the essence.

3. Have spare clothes in the car

Accidents are bound to happen with little ones, whether they’re spilling food on themselves or getting soaked on the wet slide at the play park. That’s why it’s necessary to keep extra clothes handy. Consider storing a bag in your car with essentials like wet wipes, underwear, towels, t-shirts, and jogging bottoms. This way, you’re always prepared whenever the need arises.

4. Family Shared calender

Use shared calendar where everyone can see it and add the activities to it. If you wish you could colour code it according to household members.

5. Carry snacks in your bag

Always have snacks in your bag for when your children ask you for snacks when you are out and about, this will save you from buying snacks when you are out. It is also handy to always have snacks in your car so if forgot to pack them in your bag, at least you will have them in a car.

6. Freeze smoothies

To incorporate more vegetables into your kids’ diet, try making vegetable/fruit smoothies and freezing them into ice lollies. This tasty and creative approach can make getting those essential nutrients more enjoyable for your children. Plus Ice lollies can provide relief when they have sore throat.

7. Make the bed twice

Make your toddler/child bed twice by layer mattress protector and fitted sheets on top of each other. By doing so, if your child has an accident you can just remove the top layer of mattress protector and fitted bed sheet, revealing a clean set of beddings underneath. this quick and efficient method ensures your child can get back to bed without delays.

8. Cut your Child nails when they are sleeping

By cutting nails while your child is sleeping, will save you a lot of tears and stress and will leave you less frustrated.

9. Set timer for kids tasks

It is unbelievable how much you and your kids can accomplish with the help of a timer. Before setting the timer, it is beneficial to explain to your children what will occur and what tasks you expect them to complete once the alarm sounds. Whether it’s ensuring efficient teeth brushing, tidying up, to managing screen time, signalling departure from the park, a timer serves as a helpful tool in daily routines.

10. Multiple baby changing station

If you have a 2 story home or more, setting up a extra nappies, wipes, changing of clothes is ultimate timesaver. by doing this will save you from going up and down all the time when the baby needs changing. This can also apply when you are potty training your toddler. have some spare clothes and underwear downstairs for when your toddler need changing.

11, Routine

Creating a daily routine for children not only offers them a sense of security, structure and consistence but can also be made more enjoyable by turning tasks into fun activities. For example, turning activities like dressed, brushing teeth, tiding up their toys, clearing the table into a playful race can make the routine engaging and exciting for kids.

12. Dealing with Meltdown

When a child is experiencing a meltdown, try asking them about the colours of their trousers, shirts, shoes or any clothing they’re wearing. This simple tactic can provide a distraction, momentarily halting their meltdown as the child focuses on recalling the colours of their attire redirecting their attention away from the distressing situation.

13. Have first aid kit

It is sensible to have a first aid kit readily available in your home, especially since accidents can occur unexpectedly. Consider placing a first aid kit on each floor, particularly if your home has multiple level. Ensure these kits are well-stocked with essential supplies.

14. Groceries Delivery/Pick up

Grocery delivery and pickup (click and collect) services have become increasingly popular option for anyone seeking convenience and efficiency in your shopping routine. These services offer the flexibility of having groceries delivered directly to your doorstep or being able to pick them up at designated location at your convenience.

15. School pick-up alarm

Set alarm to remind you when it is time to leave for school run especially if you are a busy parent.

There are plenty books about motherhood but they only serve as guide. Motherhood is so complex and even experienced mums strangle to master it. The role of a mother is a journey of constant growth, filled with ups and downs and opportunities of self discovery. With motherhood you learn and grow with your children.

As I sat down I found myself reflecting on the past year (still can’t believe we are in new year) a lot of lessons that motherhood has showed me. It’s often said that life is the greatest teacher and 2023 has been no exception

Join me as I unravel the lessons that have shaped my journey as a mum over the past year

1. Embracing Change

One of the lessons last year has taught me is the inevitability and beauty of change. Whether it is watching my youngest child take those initial steps into nursery or my eldest starting Reception class. As a mother, witnessing the separation anxiety that often accompanies the early days of nursery/school can be challenging. This reminded me that change is not just part of life, but is a catalyst for growth.

2. Patience is a Virtual

Motherhood and its demands more often will test your patience and last year has been a masterclass on embracing patience. Dealing with the terrible (I mean wonderful!!) 2’s and the tantrums that comes with this age, and playing the constant role of mediator when my kids are in disagreement. Motherhood has taught me to weather the storm with patience, offering a comforting presence.

3. Prioritising Self-care

In the whirlwind of everyday life as a working mum and looking after the family its is easy to overlook the importance of self care. I have come to realise that my well-being is linked to my family well-being. Taking a step back from mum life and practicing self-care has improve my health and well-being. Self-care is not a luxury but a necessity, so carving out time to do what I love has been a blessing.

4. Being Present

In chaos of modern day life distractions are all around and fill up our time. The art of being present is truly a gift. I have learnt that being present for my kids is not about the quantity of time spent with them but the quality of attention I have given them. Whether it’s simply being present for my kids, engaging in imaginative play, reassuring them during challenging moments or reading them a book the importance of presence lies in the connection of those shared moments.

5. Adaptability

With kids, change is constant and as a mama adapting becomes second nature. so last year has taught me to be flexible in my plans. As a mum, I have learnt to navigate my childrens ever changing needs with a flexible mindset. I have adapted to the beauty of going with the flow.

6. Breaking Free From Quilt

As a mother, quilt, can be like a heavy anchor hindering us the ability to fully embrace the present and future. I have learnt to let go of unnecessary quilt and give myself some grace. All I can continue to do is to be there for my little ones and love them.

7. Accepting Imperfection

Embracing imperfection in motherhood unfolds as a liberating journey. I have come to embrace that imperfection is a collection of beautifully flawed moments—from the mess of my living space to incomplete homework and hurried rushes to appointments. Through these imperfections I have discovered that what truly matters is the love that we invest in each other.

Conclusion:

Motherhood is undeniably the most fulfilling job, but it can also be grueling and at times, downright terrifying. Throughout my journey, the art of patience has become my constant companion. Parenting continually reinforces the idea that the most precious aspects of life demand time, understanding and nurturing. As I navigate the ever-changing demands of motherhood, I carry with me the invaluable lessons acquired in 2023 as a guiding light illuminating the path ahead.

Happy New Year!

As the festive season is in full swing, you can’t deny the warmth, joy and anticipation of Christmas. However for many, the Christmas festivities can be accompanied with overspending. Christmas has a beautiful way of inspiring generosity, it is also easy to be carried away with spirit of giving. Finding ourselves dealing with financial difficulties in the New Year.

In this blog post, we will discuss effective and practical ways to reduce those spending habits. This will ensure that your Festive cheer is not just memorable but also financially responsible.

We will get into hacks that can help you navigate the Christmas season without going beyond your means or breaking the bank. I hope these tips will help you not to excessively overspend during festive season.

8 hacks to reduce overspend during Christmas

1. Set Your Budget

Planning for budget friendly Christmas does not necessary start in December but 1st of January. Set a realistic budget for your Christmas and save money every month towards your goal. You can create “Christmas Fund” pot so you can easily track your savings. After you have reached your saving goal, you can come up with how much amount you allocate for food, presents and other expenses.

2. Buy a Fake Tree

Get a fake tree instead of real one, real trees can be costly in a long run and also a nightmare to clean and require watering. You can grab a bargain on second hand Christmas tree on places like Facebook market, or Ebay. You can also try to get a tree during “after Christmas sale” or January sale (If you are based in uk).

3. Altenative Gifts

Instead of traditional gift, you could give a gift of your time/volunteer. Offer to look after the kids or do some chores of the person you are gifting. Consider on hand making presents for your loved ones. DIY gifts can be both cost-effective and meaningful. Some of the things you could make is; baking goodies, home made candles, knitted scarves etc

4. Hand Made Cards

Embark on a delightful do-it-yourself project that promises to captivate the entire family. This creative endeavor isn’t just a craft; it’s a brilliant idea for children to immerse themselves in a fun and artistic activity. Get ready to turn ordinary moments into extraordinary memories with this engaging family-friendly project!

5. Make Your Own Decorations

Embrace the festive spirit by carving out time to craft your own Christmas decorations. Dive into a creative session with your children, crafting delightful do-it-yourself ornaments to adorn your tree or enhance the festive ambiance in your home. While these handmade treasures may not rival the perfection of store-bought decorations, they become cherished memories woven with your family’s unique touch. This not only adds a personal flair to your holiday decor but also allows you to savor the joy of creating special moments while saving a bit of money in the process.

6. Secret Santa

The other way to reduce overspending especially if you have a big family is to do secret Santa drawing. You could agree on amount cap on the gift to avoid any complication. By doing Secret Santa will make sure that everyone has a present during Christmas gathering.

7. Track Your Spending

If you have thoughtfully set your budget, it is very important that you follow it thru it by sticking to your budget. Even though it might not be easy to avoid overspending during Festive season but if you are disciplined enough your bank balance will thank you.

8. Buying Secondhand

You can save money by shopping secondhand and also is more sustainable. You can find bargain from shopping on Facebook Market, Vinted, Shprock, Charity shops, etc.

Christmas it is indeed the best time of the year. You have decorated your beautiful tree with your family but the little ones have other ideas of taking out the decorations on the tree.

Toddlers years can be tough at times and Christmas cheer can come with it’s own challenges

Celebrating Christmas with two kids has been different over the years. My first experience was sort of challenging. My daughter Willa (two at the time) she was not drawn too much to the Christmas tree. However my son JT (9 months at the time) was crawling and exploring around.

Boy it was an another level experience. I would turn my back for a second and he’d make a run for the tree. It was a game of catching the baby all the time. This left me and my husband exhausted and frustrated at times.

After so much research, trial and error through resources, I have found a few simple ways to keep your curious little ones safe and your Christmas tree intact.

Attacked Christmas Tree

7 simple ways to keep your toddler away from your decorated Christmas tree

1. Choose a fake tree!

Pine needles that sheds from the real tree are not just messy and annoying but can also be a risk to your baby/toddler if they manage to eat them.

2. Let them Touch the Tree

What toddlers wants is to know and explore. The more you tell them No, they want to find out “why they have been told NO” therefore leading to more curiosity. Just let them explore it and after a while they will be bored with the tree and move on to something else.

3. Give them their own tree

Try and give them their own tree. This could be a small tree that they could decorate themselves. You can easily found a mini tree on amazon. It does not have to be expensive. if you are into DIY you can try and make your own Christmas tree.

4. Use Non-Breakable Ornaments

Use kids friendly Christmas ornaments on the lower part of tree, where your little one can reach. You can also try and make your own DIY child friendly ornaments

5. Put a barrier around Christmas tree

You can do this by creating gift fence around your tree. Putting decorated boxes in front of tree or you could put fence around the actual Christmas tree.

6. Decorate Top Of the Tree

Only decorate half top of the tree where you little one can’t reach and finish the rest of tree at a later stage.

7. Add Bell ornaments to you tree

If you are a parent yo a toddler you know silence is not always golden. So decorating your tree with the bells will act as an alarm to alert you that the tree is under attack.

Final thoughts….

Although Toddler years may be stressful at times, they’re also so rewarding in many ways. One thing to remember as you go through this stage is your Toddler is only little for a short time, this will be over before you know it. There is beauty in toddler years, so find ways to enjoy your Christmas tree with your little ones.

I hope these simple tips and tricks will help you keep your decorated family christmas tree intact before Santa visits.

Have a wonderful festive season
